Cookers & Steamers


A healthful kitchen should have a good pressure cooker and a good steamer.

Pressure cookers use heat, steam and pressure while retaining the nutrients in the food.  Pressure cookers are great for cooking meats.  They come out so tender and juicy.  You can add your vegetables and spices to the meat while it cooks.  Pressure cookers are important to have for sterilization.  I use a pressure cooker for “canning” and preserving the harvest from my garden or the farmer’s market.

Steaming is a very healthy way of cooking.  It uses hot water to cook the food and avoids the use of added fats and salts.  Vegetables are delicious steamed in their purity, just as is.  I prefer steaming rather than pressure cooking my vegetables because they are tender and I don’t want to overdo them.  I like my broccoli somewhat crisp and still fresh tasting, not limp.

Pressure cooking and steaming are good methods to use for low fat cooking.
